Mardi Gras and King cake

On Facebook some friends and I have been passing Mardi Gras bead and masks. This has made me think about many people don't understand the meaning of the holiday season. In the area in which my married family lives its very common to see King cakes in the bakery and Mardi Gras supplies in the stores. Mari Gras isn't just a reason to throw back a few beers and bare it all like TV makes it seem. It is a religious holiday starting the 6th of January and lasting until Midnight on "Fat Tuesday" (The Tuesday before Ash Wednesday and the start of Lint)
The King cake has been associated with Mardi Gras for many years. The King cake reminds us of the they day the three wise men of the east, Casper, Melchior and Balthazar, found baby Jesus. It also reminds us of unity of all Christians by its oval shape. The colors purple, gold and green stand for justice, power and faith. A small baby is hidden in the cake to symbolize the finding of baby Jesus. Whoever finds this baby traditionally buys the next King Cake. Kelley found the baby this year!
